The DREAM-Film WP3 – Dissemination and knowledge sharing aims to share with the scientific community, archivists and film restoration experts the project's objectives, results and outcomes.
The main objective of WP3 is the promotion of the DREAM-Film democratic approach to film restoration, increasing the dissemination of more suitable practices to make access to research in audiovisual
heritage more inclusive. The dissemination activities (WP3) involve organising workshops and participating in international conferences and scientific publications.
The DREAM-Film WP4 - Communication activities involve the management and subscription to the leading social media, the supervision of the website and the participation in film festivals.
The realisation of this objective will have a strong societal impact, increasing the political interest in this domain and generating more events, projects and actions in film restoration at national,
European and international levels. For this reason, we aim to share all the project objectives, results and outcomes with the general public, creating an inclusive environment of knowledge-sharing and
active participation.
"The Past is the Future" is the first-of-its-kind non-conference focused on film archives, organized by Cineteca dello Stretto in association with Lanterne Magiche Ortigia and in collaboration with the DREAM-Film project of the University of Amsterdam, with the patronage of the Gruppo del Colore. This event will take place from November 8-10, 2024, in the historic "Sala Vittorini" in Ortigia, Siracusa. It offers an interactive space for students, scholars, enthusiasts, and professionals to join a BarCamp-style gathering, where presentations and screenings inspire discussion and participation from all attendees.
The event will feature two evening performances with live soundscapes and VJ-ing by composer Michele Catania and the group Canecapovolto. The main topics will include innovative and sustainable practices in archive reuse, conservation of ephemeral and orphan materials, and the critical role of artificial intelligence in restoration and preservation. Attendees are encouraged to present proposals in themes such as home movies and archival reuse, case studies in cinematic restoration, digital preservation challenges, and the impact of archival practices on documentary filmmaking.
Presentation formats include 15-20 minute talks with Q&A, 60-minute panels, informal roundtable discussions, and screening sessions. This inclusive, pioneering event invites all participants to actively contribute to the discussions, emphasizing a collaborative approach to knowledge exchange in the archival community.

The main conference organized as part of the DREAM-Film project was the 3rd international conference on “Colour Photography and Film”, held in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) in September 2024 (Thursday 12 and Friday 13 September, 2024). The first two editions of the conference, which took place at the end of March 2021 and mid-September 2022, were a great success, with approximately 140 participants and 50 presentations from several countries across the two events. These conferences demonstrated the importance of uniting the analogue and digital worlds with the conservation of photographic materials and film.
The presentations from these events have been collected in two volumes (Volume 1, 2021; Volume 8, 2023) of the Research Culture and Science Books series (RCASB), which are available at the following link: www.rcasb.eu/catalog
Due to requests from many colleagues, the third conference was organized in person, with the option for virtual participation, spanning two days, 12-13 September 2024. Contributors shared their recent research and experiences on analogue and digital colour materials. Highlights included discussions on history, preservation, conservation, restoration, and digital migration of colour photographs and film, as well as interdisciplinary perspectives on the impact of colour photography and film technologies on society and culture.
More detailed information on the conference can be found on the Gruppo del Colore – Associazione Italiana del Colore conference website: www.gruppodelcolore.org/the-conference
The conference was organized by The Gruppo del Colore – Associazione Italiana del Colore (Color Group – Italian Color Association), in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Eye Filmmuseum (Eye), the Istituto di Fisica Applicata “Nello Carrara” of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (IFAC-CNR), and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (OPD).
